The film Gopi Gopika Godavari is a love story between a doctor and a singer. The two lovers have never met but fall in love while talking to each other over phone for several days. When they finally plan to meet fate intervenes and they are separated by the circumstances. Will they ever meet and if so when and how is the premise on which the story is built.

Story:
Gopika (Kamalini Mukherjee) is a doctor who runs a mobile boat clinic in Polavaram. She stays with her mother Jayalalitha. A young doctor from the US comes to met her and he also wants to start a mobile boat clinic like her in Srisailam. He also likes Gopika at first sight and proposes to marry her.
Gopika says that marriage is not on her mind at that time and when she thinks of marriage, she will think about him first. Gopi (Venu) is a singer and he runs a orchestra. He finds a cell phone in a telephone both and gets a call from Gopika. The phone belongs to Gopika’s best friend. She has committed suicide after a failed love affair.

Gopi helps the girl’s father with the last rites and this impresses Gopika very much. Gopi and Gopika talk over phone every day and they slowly fall in love. They plan to meet in Hyderabad but Gopi is mistaken for a communist as he is wearing a red shirt and is locked up in police station for taking part in a protest rally.

Gopi then plans to meet Gopika in Polavaram. He sets out from Bhadracham but is attacked by some robbers. They steal his bag and hit him on his had teeth sticks and throw him into the river Godavari. Gopika is upset as Gopi fails to turn up in Polvaram as promised. Gopi later surfaces at Polavaram in a unconscious stage on the river bed. Gopika and her team bring the man to the mobile boat clinic and treat him.

Gopi loses memory due to the injuries on his head. Gopika still waits for Gopi to turn up. She does not know that the man she rescued and is treating is actually Gopi. Gopika’s mother then asks her daughter to forget Gopi and marry the young doctor as Gopi is now presumed dead.

Gopika agrees and the marriage is finalized. Just before the marriage is performed, some goons once again attack Gopi and hit him on the head. The injuries make Gopi to recollect his past. Sadly Gopi realizes that it is too late and he does not reveal his real identity to Gopika. Gopi’s blind mother learns about the truth and she tells everyone the truth and the film finally ends with Gopi and Gopika coming together.

Performance:

Kamalini Mukherjee plays the kind hearted doctor quite well. She in a way continues her doctor act from Gamyam. Kamalini looks good and she does justice to her role.

Venu play a singer and he is okay in his role. For a change, Venu does not go all out as a comic hero but plays a much serious role. Venu also carries his role with dignity.

Geetnajali as Venu’s blind mother is okay. Jayalalitha plays Kamalini’s mother and she goes about her job as per the requirements of the script. Krishna Bhagawan tries to evoke some laughter but fails. Sana and others are okay.

Music is okay. The film has been set against the Godavari backdrop but the director does not capture the beauty of the river and the villages fully. Except for the comedy track between the compounder and a boatman over a box of stolen medicines, there is not much comedy.

The first half of the film moves at a snail’s pace and the comedy is also very dull. It is only in the second half that the film gathers some speed. The last half an hour or so is interesting.

Gopi Gopika Godavari is not one of the best films of Vamsi. The film fails to live up to the expectations of the audiences.
